Abstract

A LOW-COST SOLAR ULTRAVIOLET SCANNING SPECTRORADIOMETER, SUITABLE FOR MODERATE RESOLUTION (1 NM) MEASUREMENTS OF SOLAR IRRADIANCE IN THE UV-B SPECTRAL RANGE, 290-320 NM IS BEING DEVELOPED. THE OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTRUMENT ARE SOLAR UV-B AND COLUMN OZONE MEASUREMENTS FOR THE DETECTION OF SECULAR TRENDS. THIS WOULD COMPLEMENT THE VERY EXPENSIVE SCANNING SPECTRORADIOMETERS, CURRENTLY IN USE FOR STRATOSPHERIC OZONE MEASUREMENTS, BY PROVIDING COMPARABLE MEASUREMENTS WITH A RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE INSTRUMENT SUITABLE FOR WIDE GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION. IT ALSO COMPLEMENTS SATELLITE OZONE OBSERVATIONS, PROVIDING CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENTS AT SPECIFIC LOCATIONS AND "GROUND TRUTH" TO COORDINATE WITH SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS. THE GOAL IS TO DEVELOP A STANDARD AND RELIABLE, BUT ECONOMICAL, INSTRUMENT FOR GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION IN A WORLDWIDE NETWORK FOR MEASURING AND MONITORING ANTHROPOGENIC CHANGES IN THE ATMOSPHERE.
