Abstract:
IR seekers are used in kill vehicle missiles for functions ranging from target recognition and discrimination to terminal guidance. Improved methods of measuring the angular position of the mirror would allow better feedback control of the mirror and thus significantly improve the overall performance of the IR Seekers. We are applying optimal control theory techniques to control the mirror via very high speed digital signal processors, DACs and class D amplifiers. The Phase I preliminary design results clearly established the feasibility of the Saraswati sensing and mirror control approach. Mirror control performance depends strongly on the mirror itself. The performance of the mirror position sensing system is: Angular resolution of better than 80 nano-radians for the kill vehicle application Angular position readout rate of greater than 50 kHz Virtually no impact to the loading condition on the scan mirror Mirror control DSP,DAC, and Class D amplifier with up to 85% efficiency Virtually no sensitivity to EMI or drive coil fields Absolute angular position sensing to provide instantaneous autonomous recovery after EMP or SEU event Approach ratified by BAE Systems for potential use in THAAD, MKV, and other BMD programs Potential sensitivity of better than 1 nano-radian for other sensing applications
