Increasing bandwidth is becoming essential in today's battlefield due to the level of communication that is necessary to support soldiers fighting in constantly changing hostile conditions. Unfortunately, space based communication systems have lagged behind the development of high data rate land based optical communication switching systems and are becoming a bottle neck in the data transfer environment. Our goal in developing a ruggedized space qualified optical switch in this program will be achieved through cutting edge shock and vibration isolation (for launch environments), proper system power management, optimized thermal dissipation and the utilization of radiation tolerant components integrated with the best performing commercial off the shelf (COTS) optical switching hardware. A key factor in developing a reliable, robust and stable optical switch system for space applications is in the selection of the core switching mechanism. Due to our extensive knowledge in 3D MEMS optical switch development, SA Photonics has selected an optical switch system that is one of the highest performing, most scalable, compact and reconfigurable switch systems available. Our background in developing both 3D MEMS switch hardware and space qualified hardware is the optimal balance of talents to ensure hardware success during this program.
