Compact, Lightweight New Technology Generator Demonstration
Agency / Branch:
DOD / ARMY
The Army's need for lightweight, high performance alternators could be met by high frequency, high speed integrated alternator-generator sets using SatCon's in-house expertise in high-speed machinery and knowledge of state-of-the-art technology and materials. SatCon is in the process of fabricating and testing a 250 HP, 60,000 RPM, liquid-cooled turbo-alternator for Chrysler Corporation. The specific power density of this alternator is better than 6.8 kW/kg. Preliminary calculations show that a lightweight low volume alternator similar to the Chrysler turbo-alternator, having similar specific power densities can be developed. Phase I of the proposal will be the development of a lightweight, low volume alternator and a high efficiency power electronics drive to control and drive it. Various alternator configurations will be designed, and the best will be developed to make the best use of optimum semiconductor technology. Commercial potential of SatCon's technology is promising for low emission hybrid electric vehicles and portable, quickly deployable power supplies.
