Perceptual Organization refers to the ability of a machine visionsystem to organize detected features, or primitives, in imagesbased on, Gestaltic and other criteria. There have been a number ofcontributions that demonstrate the importance of perceptualorganization for various vision tasks such as object recognition, stereo, motion, image databases, building detection and changedetection. The Phase I demonstrated preliminary results using large IR datasetsfrom Army NVL and Army MICOM. The Phase II will continue thisdevelopment and demonstrate this technology on static IR data forcontour and texture analysis and sequence IR data motion segmentationand tracking. This demonstration will be tied to an Army testbed orplatform. Specific Phase II tasks are: (1) Acquisition of InfraredWavelength Data for Test and Demonstration (2) Development of ATRalgorithms using Perceptual Organization (3) Test and Evaluation ofthe ATR-PO algorithms (4) Commercialization (5) Reports and Meetings(6) Phase II Deliverables and Phase III recommendations. The project team is composed of Scientific Systems Company Inc (SSCI)and consultants Prof. Sanjoy Mitter and Dr. Stefano Casadei of theMassachusetts Institute of Technology and Prof. Sudeep Sarkar of theUniversity of South Florida. SSCI is an expert developer of ATRalgorithms and has successfully implemented many special cases ofthese technologies in real DoD applications using real-world dataDrs. Mitter, Casadei and Sarkar are experts in the field of PerceptualOrganization.
