Compact Quantum Dot Mode-Locked Lasers for Arbitrary Waveform Generation

The proposed Phase II effort will extend the Phase I results to use new quantum dot laser diode designs based on increased cavity size and low internal optical loss to increase pulse energy over existing demonstrations. An integrated optical amplifier will be developed based on the same quantum dot gain material for further power increase. Submount packaging will be developed for efficient heat sinking and separate electrical contacting of the gain, absorber, and amplifier stages. The increased pulse energy and high repetition rate of the short optical pulses are important for compact, reliable, and low cost laser sources in military and commercial lidar applications. Eye-safe wavelength operation will be explored using new quantum dot growth techniques to extend the emission wavelength into the 1.55 m range. Industrial applications of the technology include frequency doubling for displays, medical imaging, tissue modification, and optical clocks.
