Not Available High throughput, low cost manufacturing methods will be developed to create biomimetic scaffold materials that exhibit the microstructure, porosity, and high surface area of the molecular frameworks of living cells and tissues. These biomimetic scaffolds will represent a core platform technology than can be coated with other existing high surface area materials, including porous bioactive polymer gels, aerogels, and zeolites to further increase the effective surface area available for catalysis and exchange, thereby permitting miniaturization of functional biocatalytic systems and use with biological fluids. Using proprietary CAD capabilities and manufacturing techniques, materials by design materials with existing high strength and stiffness. The ability to coat these materials with existing high surface area materials and molecular enzymes that promote biocatalysis also will be enzymatically deactivate chemical toxins, such as organophosphate-based nerve gases, with higher efficiency than is currently possible. Phase II will create mesoscale organelles with specialized bioprocessing capabilities, including functional units for detoxification and an artificial gill for respiration (oxygen generation and clearance of carbondioxide).
