Abstract:

"Metafex (for metal-fueled explosive replacement) combines thetechnologies of explosive reaction thermochemistry and pulsedelectrical power. The technology will make systems formerlyrequiring hazardous explosives not only safer and more energeticbut also lower in cost. Analysis shows that Metafex energydensities are more than twice as great as those of conventionalexplosives.Because Metafex energy density is greater, weapon components canbe made smaller and/or more effective, yet safer, if they useMetafex in place of explosives. There are many militaryapplications, including the linear shaped charges (LSC's) onwhich the proposal focuses.By replacing the sensitive explosives in LSC's with Metafex, systems will be safer. Because the Metafex explosive replacementwill be safer, it will be less costly to manufacture, to ship, and to use.In contrast to conventional ones, the proposed LSC's require noexplosives. They are environmentally benign, can be safelyshipped anywhere, and need no special handling. The LSC's will beinert until activated by energetic electrical pulses. In Phase II of the proposed project, flat packs for Metafex LSC'swill be built and tested. Enhancements to the project are testsof LSC's made from flat packs, scaling to full size, and systemstudies.BENEFITS: Other military applications include multipoint systems for warhead initiation, stage separation devices for missiles, demolition devices, and mine-clearing systems.
