Abstract

ADDRESSING THE NEED FOR INCREASINGLY LIGHTER STRUCTURAL COMPOSITES WITH IMPROVED THERMAL AND ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES, A NEW METHOD IS PROPOSED FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ECONOMICAL HIGH TEMPERATURE POLYMER-METAL COMPOSITES. THESE MATERIALS ARE PRODUCED BY A PATENTED ULTRA HIGH SPEED VACUUM PROCESS, THAT MAKES USE OF RADIATION CROSS LINKED, MULTIFUNCTIONAL ACRYLATE MONOMER MATERIALS. POLYMER LAMINATES MADE BY THIS PROCESS HAVE EXCELLENT THERMAL CHARACTERISTICS AND THEIR STRUCTURAL AND THERMAL PROPERTIES CAN BE TAILORED BY ADDING FUNCTIONALITIES SUCH CYANO, HALOGEN, AMINE, NITRILE AND METALLATED GROUPS, IN THE BACKBONE OR SIDE CHAIN OF THE ACRYLATE MOLECULE. THE METAL LAYERS CAN BE ONE OF SEVERAL MATERIALS THAT INCLUDE Al, Ni, Cu, Co, AND SS. THESE NEW COMPOSITES HAVE EXCELLENT ELECTRICAL AND THERMAL CONDUCTION CHARACTERISTICS AND UNIQUE GAS AND MOISTURE BARRIER PROPERTIES. A PATENTED BONDING/JOINING PROCESS IS PROPOSED THAT WILL ALLOW THESE MATERIALS TO CONDUCT ELECTRICAL CURRENT LIKE METALS AND ALSO TO FORM HERMETIC STRUCTURES AT HIGH VACUUM ENVIRONMENTS. THE PROPOSED INVESTIGATION WILL DEMONSTRATE THE FABRICATION ON THE NEW COMPOSITES, IT WILL ESTABLISH A BASELINE OF MECHANICAL AND THERMAL PERFORMANCE AND IT WILL DEMONSTRATE THE NEW BONDING TECHNOLOGY AND CURRENT CARRYING ABILITY OF THESE MATERIALS.
