Abstract:
An overwhelming need exists for an economical methodology to convert existing mainframe hosted scientific software to a personal computer (PC) graphical user interface (GUI) environment. Currently, this done as a tedious manual process that is inefficient and expensive. Without more efficient methods, valuable scientific software may be discarded as mainframe computers are phased out. Spectra Research, Inc. (S*R) proposes to develop the Visual Porting Executive for Windows (VP*Exec) to solve this problem. VP*Exec will automate the process of converting analysis code, and generating GUI tools to control program execution, setup inputs, configure output, and provide data visualization. S*R will reuse software developed on a U.S. Army Phase II SBIR to implement much of the VP*Exec software. A innovative Code Analyzer capable of determining the input and output parameters through a sequential process of scanning and analyzing the FORTRAN code will be developed. S*R's highly experienced software team will develop a prototype demonstration during Phase I. S*R research has indicated that a strong market exists for VP*Exec and plans to begin commercialization the product during Phase II.
