Abstract

New tactical missiles may require on-demand thrust control utilizing liquid propellent systems. the objective of this project is to develop a small, highly controllable, low cost. electrically driven high pressure liquid fuel pump to be used for tactical missile propulsion sustems. Phase I will investigate the feasibility of a novel solid-state pump technology. The device will operate at very high frequencies and utilize an array of giant magnetostrictive modules. The very high energy density of the magnetostrictive material will facilitate a compact design. the solid state pump will hve no shaft, thus it will not need seals, bearings, lubricants or moving parts and should be reliable. Phase I will establish feasibility using prototyp for evaluation by the sponser.
