Abstract:
A NOVEL HYBRID SOLID-LIQUID LUBRICATION CONCEPT FOR 600 DEGREES C-1000 DEGREES C ENGINE OPERATION IS PROPOSED BASED ON THE POTENTIAL SYNERGISTIC INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THERMALLY STABLE TRANSITION METAL CHLORIDE INTERCALATED GRAPHITES (TMCIGS) AND ORGANOPHORPHOROUS LIQUIDS. RESEARCH WILL FOCUS ON (A) THE THERMAL-OXIDATIVE STABILITY AND DEGRADATION CHEMISTRY AND KINETICS OF INDIVIDUAL TMCIGS AND ORGANOPHOSPHOROUS, (B) THE FRICTION AND WEAR BEHAVIOR OF HYBRID TMGIC-ORGANAPHASPHOROUS FORMULATIONS IN CONTACT WITH SELECTED ALLOY, OXIDE, NITRIDE AND CARBIDE MATERIALS UP TO 1500 DEGREES F AND (C) RESULTANT SYNERGISTIC CHEMICAL REACTIONS BETWEEN THE TMCIGS-ORGANAPHOSPHOROUS LIQUIDS AND RING-LINER TEST COUPONS.
