Abstract:
Techno-Sciences, Inc. (TSi), in collaboration with the Smart Structures Laboratory of the Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center at the University of Maryland (UMD), and Bell Helicopter, proposes to develop an innovative Active Pitch Link (APL) Technology for improved active rotor performance. The APL will exploit superior performance characteristics of new single crystal ferroelectric material, PMN, and nano-particle enhanced magneto-rheological (MR) fluid technology. This hybrid device efficiently marries two high-energy density electromechanical materials, PMN ferroelectric material and magnetorheological fluids, to provide full-scale rotor control. Central to the proposed smart rotor concept is configuration of the adaptive material as a discrete component that does not require on-blade installation, and provides ease of maintenance. Although the APL is a hydraulic system, the pump, feed lines, and flow control valves, as well as all of the hydraulic working fluid, are contained within the APL system itself - no external hydraulic lines are needed to drive the APL as in conventional actuators, only electrical connections.
