Title:
Data Grids for Large-Scale Fusion Simulations
Agency:
DOE
Contract:
DE-FG03-02ER83555
Award Amount:
$99,993.00
Abstract:
70796 Simulations in fusion energy research are generating large data sets at remote sites, making the visualization and analysis of these data sets difficult. Also, downloading the data to local computers can take hours over even the fastest network connections. In this project, grid technologies will be applied and extended to the distribution of data sets produced by fusion simulations. The extensions will include the ability to access the data through interfaces standard in the fusion community, so that visualization tools of the fusion community can be reused. Phase I will develop two prototypes for a fusion data grid system and assess their performance using remotely located large data sets. The prototypes will each feature a different data server scheme, and the difficulty in creating a bridge between them will be investigated. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: A tool for remote visualization of large data sets should be applicable to any industry where high-performance computing at remote sites is critical. This includes the aerospace industry, where new designs depend critically on full-scale simulations, and the oil and gas industry, where discovery of new sources heavily on large-scale modeling.
