Low Loss Hologram Filters for the Infrared

The proposed Phase II project builds upon the success of the Phase I effort, and will demonstrate and deliver high-performance, infrared notch filters capable of protecting critical imaging systems from attack from laser weapons operating at multiple wavelengths. Based on surface structure, wave-guide resonant holograms, the new filters are capable of rejecting better than 99% of infrared light within each notch. The potential for high transmission outside each notch, as shown in Phase I, will be realized and refined in Phase II. A Phase II project is needed to develop controlled manufacturing processes suitable for commercialization in Phase III. Fabrication issues revealed during the Phase I project will be investigated and optimized. Plans for scaling up the size of the filter windows developed in Phase I will be implemented. Filters developed during a Phase II project will be commercialized through collaboration with Janos Technologies, an established and respected provider of infrared optics to the defense, space, and commercial industries. A successful Phase II effort will deliver 4-inch diameter, multi-notch filter windows for testing in military imaging systems
