Abstract:
Digital cameras offer extraordinary advantages in reconnaissance applications. They provide critical real time imaging capabilities not available with film; images can be transmitted electronically with no time delay. Unfortunately, commercially available digital cameras cannot withstand the conditions encountered by a Marine Expeditionary Force Reconnaissance Team (MEFRT). A protective housing is needed to shield the camera from harsh environmental and physical challenges. Texas Research Institute Austin, Inc. (TRI/Austin) will develop advanced structural polyurethane formulations that will be used in the design of a rugged, waterproof, saltwater resistant, shock resistant, camera housing. A prototype housing that allows control of all camera functions will be prepared, including component drawings, a parts list, and assembly and operating instructions. A final report will be prepared, and the prototype digital camera housing will be delivered to the sponsor.
