Abstract:
Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) part programs generated by different CAD/CAM software packages are incompatible, which can lead to significant delay and increased engineering and programming labor cost if programs generated at one facility are used at another facility with a different CAD/CAM package. In the proposed research, software algorithms will be developed to convert controller-specific part programs (G-code) into a neutral format which can be edited by any CAD/CAM package. In Phase I, the technology will be demonstrated for a simple 3-axis milled part. An initial part program will be converted to a neutral CL format, edited using Pro-Manufacture, and post-processed to generate a modified part program, which will be verified by cutting sample parts on a machining center. The algorithms will be embedded in Third Wave Systems AdvantEdgeT Production Module tool path analysis program, so that the part program can be analyzed and modified to level forces and reduce cycle time as part of the conversion process.
