Abstract:
TIAX with the support of Cascade Designs, Inc propose to develop a high efficiency Heat Exchanger Cup (HEXC) for use with the Modular Individual Water Heater (MIWH). The MIWH is based on a new, self-powered, fuel delivery technology, called Capillary Force Vaporizer (CFV). The overall heat transfer efficiency is determined primarily by the heated surface area of the HEXC and how the HEXC interfaces with the burner in the MIWH to maximize the combustion efficiency (shielding from cross winds and controlling excess air) and to maximize the heat transfer from the flame and hot gases to the HEXC surface. Phase I of this project is the development, testing and trade-off evaluation of HEXC design options for high efficiency heat transfer, soldier useability and durability, compact stowage, manufacturability and cost effectiveness. The primary focus of the HEXC design is the application of liquid fuel-fired burner design to the development of surface features and system geometries that promote high heat transfer and optimum gas flow while minimizing unwanted emissions, particularly soot.
