Abstract

A number of Army systems today depend on GPS for position and timing information. Reception of GPS signals on the battlefield is threatened by the effectiveness of ground-based GPS jamming devices, which are easy to construct and available from a number of sources worldwide. There is a need to improve the resistance of Army systems to ground-based jamming without incurring the cost or physical footprint of a fully adaptive GPS anti-jam antenna system. Toyon Research Corporation proposes to design and construct a GPS receive antenna that can detect the presence of jamming and automatically switch into one of several low elevation angle nulling modes. Each nulling mode will be designed to counteract jamming at a particular elevation angle, from 5 to 20 degrees above the horizon. The antenna system will be designed to operate at both the L1 and L2 frequency bands, powered by a single 12-Volt source, and will fit within a circular footprint measuring 1.5 inches in diameter and 5.5 inches tall.
