Abstract

All aspects of the armed forces require energy. Portable, renewable energy sources can help reduce the weight and size of both manned and autonomous systems. For example, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), Intelligent Munition Systems, and even soldier systems can all benefit from utilization of advanced, high efficiency, renewable power sources. Advanced photovoltaic systems (PV) are a clean and abundant energy source for portable power. The traditional drawback of PV is the low efficiency of conversion seen with traditional materials. Triton Systems, Inc. proposes to develop and innovative PV system utilizing Quantum Dot semiconductor materials to increase the quantum yield of the PV. The quantum dots will allow tuning of the PV band-gap, thus allow greater spectral absorption and conversion. In addition, quantum-dot-based systems allow for multiple electron generation from higher-energy photons. In Phase II, Triton will continue the development of the PV system to produce PVs with efficiencies between 15 โ€“ 30% over areas on the order of 4โ€ X 4โ€ area.
