51011-98-I Integrated Electric Traction System--Unique Mobility, Inc., 425 Corporate Circle, , Golden, CO 80401-5635; (303) 278-2002 Mr. Jon R. Lutz, Principal Investigator Mr. Donald A. French, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG03-98ER82704 Amount: $74,640 The Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV) program is seeking cost reduction and power density improvement ideas regarding electric drive motors. One of the contenders, a brushless permanent magnet motor, demonstrates superior performance. This project will improve the cost-effectiveness and packaging of this technology, and reduce drive system part count and size, by integrating the gear reduction and differential into the electric motor itself. Phase I will determine design feasibility and Phase II would result in a full-scale functional system. The Phase I project will identify the PNGV drive system specifications, design the integrated package, analyze the mechanical integrity and performance, prepare a detailed conceptual drawing, and prepare a cost analysis based upon a detailed parts list. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: This technology should be of interest to automotive original equipment manufacturers that are developing electric and hybrid vehicles. Expected benefits include reduced part count, cost, size, weight, and gear noise._
