Abstract:
A NONINVASIVE ALCOHOL SENSOR WILL BE DEVELOPED, BASED ON THE SALIVA MEASUREMENT OF ALCOHOL WITH AN ENZYME-BASED SENSOR. THE BASE PROBE WILL BE AN AMPEROMETRIC HYDROGEN PEROXIDE OR OXYGEN ELECTRODE THAT IS COVERED WITH A LIMITINGMEMBRANE CONTAINING ALCOHOL OXIDASE. THE SENSOR WILL BE TESTED, FIRST WITH SIMULATED SALIVA, THEN WITH REAL SALIVA SAMPLES. THE ALCOHOL IN SALIVA HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE PROPORTIONAL TO ITS CONCENTRATION IN BLOOD. THE SENSOR CONFIGURATION WILL BE OPTIMIZED FOR OPERATION WITH SALIVA, AND A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE SENSOR RESPONSE AND THE BLOOD ALCOHOL CONTENT DEMONSTRATED. THE ELECTROCHEMICAL INTERFERENCES WILL BE BLOCKED BY THE INNER MEMBRANE OF CELLULOSE ACETATE/BUTYRATE OR THE O2 MEMBRANE. SELECTIVITY FOR ETHANOL WILL BE ACHIEVED BY THE IMMOBILIZED ALCOHOL OXIDASE USED.
