Light Weight Material for Ballistic Armor

Our main objective will be to develop and evaluate lightweight armor that provides reliable ballistic protection at low cost. Our approach will include developing and evaluating materials, design and manufacturing concepts. The new armor will allowmultiple impacts without ballistic performance degradation. This Phase I program will consist of identifying candidate materials and fabrication methods. UDC will perform research on how to process and manufacture the new armor to obtain high hardness,high strength and high impact energy at a low areal density. UDC will conduct design studies to determine the maximum thickness, weight and geometry of the armor package. UDC will prove the feasibility and potential advantages of the new highperformance, lightweight armor panels during this Phase I program. At the end of Phase I, we will provide a report with results and conclusions, and a Phase II plan, schedule and cost estimate. The proposed program will make a significant contributiontowards the development of armor panels for military and commercial applications that offer ballistic protection and contribute towards achieving a relatively low weight and low manufacturing costs. This will increase overall performance, includingballistic survivability and subsequent savings in cost and weight. The resulting technology will be applicable to military, commercial aircraft, automotive, and law enforcement industries.
