Title:
Low Cost, Low Weight, Self-Sealing Fuel Tank Technology Development
Agency / Branch:
DOD / NAVY
Contract:
M67854-05-C-0041
Award Amount:
$69,962.00
Abstract:
The objective will be to develop a self-sealing fuel tank coating that is low cost, rugged, lightweight, and non-flammable; which will enable vehicle operation in hostile environments and minimize loss of fuel due to a direct/indirect hit. These coatings will be easy to install on existing fuel tanks. UDC will develop and evaluate an environmentally friendly and VOC compliant fast-curing self seal coating for EFV fuel tank. The developed self seal coatings will be compared with currently used/existing COTS/MOTS self-sealing fuel tank technologies. UDC will conduct testing to support demonstration of feasibility and recommendations. Initial screening of the self seal coating will include bullet impact resistance, self sealability of different size holes, adhesion to substrate, fire and smoke performance, chemical resistance, flexibility, water and salt fog resistance and impact resistance. At the end of Phase I, a comprehensive final report, a Phase II plan, schedule and cost estimate will be submitted.
