Abstract:

The main objective will be to optimize and improve the reliability and reduce the overall system weight for the numerous currently pneumatically actuated flight qualified valves. The Phase I formulations of lightweight and chemical resistant composites will be optimized for performance and ease of fabrication into valve components. Prototype valves will be fabricated and tested. Extensive testing of the valve components and valves fabricated by use of the new composites will be performed. UDC will quantify weight, cost and maintenance/supply improvements to be expected when the new valves will be selected for production. UDC will develop a Phase III program plan with the subcontractors that will include the production and test strategy for the new products. UDC will prepare specifications for the new materials and fabrication methods and quality control procedures. At the end of Phase II, UDC will provide a detailed report that will include all work performed, resultant data, specifications and a Phase III production plan.
