Abstract

THE PROJECT IS DIRECTED TOWARD ASSESSING THE POTENTIAL OF USING RESIDUALS FROM THE AFBC PROCESS AS A SOURCE OF LIME IN PRODUCING A SYNTHETIC AGGREGATE. THE SPENT BED MATERIAL FROM THE FLUIDIZED BED PROCESS WILL BE MIXED WITH PULVERIZED COAL FLY ASH AND OTHER RESIDUALS AND PROCESSED IN A UNIQUE FASHION TO PRODUCE THE AGGREGATE. THE UNIQUE ASPECT INVOLVES THE USE OF A VACUUM EXTRUDER TO PRODUCE A HIGH STRENGTH PRODUCT WITHOUT THE APPLICATION OF HEAT. TWO SOURCES OF FLUIDIZED BED RESIDUALS AND TWO TYPES OF PULVERIZED COAL FLY ASH WILL BE USED. THE EVALUATION WILL BE DONE IN THE LABORATORY AND WILL EVALUATE MIXING AND CONDITIONING PROCEDURES, EXTRUSION IN A VACUUM EXTRUDER, CRUSHING AND GRADING OF THE EXTRUDED PRODUCT, AND EVALUATION OF THE SYNTHETIC AGGREGATE BY STANDARD ASTM TESTS.
