Abstract:

BUILDING ON THE FOUNDATION OF MORE THAN TWO DECADES OF WORK IN AMMUNITION DEVELOPMENT AND CHARGE DESIGN, VERITAY HAS RECENTLY DEVELOPED SEVERAL NEW TECHNIQUES FOR PRODUCING CONSOLIDATED CHARGES IN THE SMALL-ARMS PROPELLANT REGIME. THESE TECHNIQUES INCLUDE SOLVENTLESS THERMAL TECHNIQUES, A SOLVENT VAPOR TECHNIQUE, AND A PRESSUREALONE TECHNIQUE. OF MAJOR CONCERN IN ALL OF OUR WORK WITH CONSOLIDATED CHARGES HAS BEEN THE DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNIQUES TO ENSURE PROTECTION FROM ADVERSE ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS AND/OR ROUGH HANDLING. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSED EFFORT IS TO DEMONSTRATE THE FEASIBILITYOF ADAPTING ONE OR MORE OF THESE TECHNIQUES TO THE MASS PRODUCTION OF CONSOLIDATED CHARGES IN THE LARGE-CALIBER REGIME. NOT ONLY DO LARGECALIBER CONSOLIDATED CHARGES OFFER THE POTENTIAL FOR IMPROVED BALLISTICS PERFORMANCE, BUT THEY ALSO HOLD THE POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT REDUCTIONS IN AMMUNITION COSTS.
