Advanced Development of an Innovative Technique for Biosampling
Agency / Branch:
DOD / ARMY
The Army has identified a need to develop effective methods of bioaerosol sampling with low power requirements, high collection efficiencies, and the capability to provide concentrated bioparticle samples for further analysis in a two-minute timeframe. To meet this objective, an innovative biosampler technique is required. Veritay has devised a unique concept for providing efficient collection and handling of bioaerosol particles, transferring these particles to a liquid carrier medium, centrifuging the mixture to achieve a concentrated sample, and periodically transferring the small liquid aliquot quickly to an output port for analysis. Phase I breadboard validation of this unique biosampler concept will form basis for Phase II advanced development. Successful development of a small, highly efficient aerosol sampler promises widespread military applications that range from warning and detection of contaminated air on the battlefield to the monitoring of dispersion patterns of biological simulants in the test and evaluation of military equipment.
