Abstract:
65214 The detection and characterization of seismic signals as they propagate across the earth¿s surface, are needed for verification of nuclear nonproliferation, as well for studies of earthquake source and propagation characteristics and seismic hazards analysis. This project will determine the feasibility of detecting and imaging seismic signals from earthquakes or explosions using space-based or airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry, commonly referred to as InSAR. Phase I will include: (1) an evaluation of existing spaceborne SAR data for acquisitions coincident with detectable seismic signals; (2) an overview of synergism between other (multi-spectral) data sources and SAR; and (3) a demonstration of the feasibility of real-time seismic imaging using an advanced dynamic InSAR simulator. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: An InSAR seismic event imaging system would contribute substantially to several areas of study in solid earth geophysics that are relevant to seismic hazards mitigation and Earth structure determination.
