Abstract:
Development of novel navigation and inertial measurement concepts for Low Cost Competent Munitions (LCCM) is proposes. The basic concept utilizes two sets of micro silicon inertial instruments for navigation and a set of control effectors for correcting the munition trajectory. The first set of instruments cluster consisting of wide range open loop rugged sensors provides navigation during the firing launch shock pulse. Subsequently it transfers the navigation to a more accurate narrow range close loop sensor cluster. The navigation function can be implemented either using a purer inertial navigation, or an integrated GPS/Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) or a relative integrated GPS/IMU mechanization. The LCCM trajectory control is effected by a set of deflectors and/or air jet actuators. The objective of the Phase I effort is to develop and analyze the guidance, navigation and control methodologies that will improve the LCCM effectiveness by minimizing round-to-round dispersion of the artillery about a target.
