A programmable, pulse code modulation (PCM) encoder for telemetry applications is proposed. Existing encoders do not provide for on-board processing of signals and, in general, are not very sophisticated as compared to current available technology. We propose development of a modular digital signal processor-based system that is configurable via a graphical user interface. A standard set of on-board processing routines will be developed and made available for use during the encoder configuration process. The configurator will be presented graphically with a set of available inputs and preprocessing modules based on the hardware configuration. The configurator will then enter the constraints of the system, such as the bit rate, and will be guided through the configuration process using a graphical format. The end result will be a layout showing the input signals used versus available sample rates, as well as processing modules used and how all of the information fits into the output data block. The package will also use and/or generate the telemetry attributes transfer standard, as defined in IRIG 106-93.
