X-Ray Diagnostics for High-Temperature Superconductor Processing
65164 The detection and discrimination of seismic events while monitoring for small nuclear explosions is complicated by a significant amount of commercial mining explosions. Although mining explosion databases have been constructed to help with this problem in various regions of the world, very little is known about the contribution of mining activity in southern Asia to the regional seismicity. This project will build an extensive ground truth database for southern Asia that includes well-located mining explosions and earthquakes, using data currently being collected in the region along with location algorithms and velocity models currently in development. Phase I will combine previously published mining explosion data from various mining regions in southern Asia with new data being collected in the region into a format-consistent database for use by the United States nuclear explosion monitoring community. Various methods will be employed to separate commercial mining explosions from the extensive natural seismicity of the region. The ground truth classification of the mining explosions will then be determined. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: The ground truth database should allow for improved seismic event discrimination and improved seismic event location in southern Asia.
