Abstract:
WINTEC proposes to define an interface for integrating a new generation of smart munitions with carrying dispensers. The proposed interface will be compatible with MIL-STD-1760 and will build on the "plug and play" concept of the commercial personal computer architectures. The defined interface will accommodate the pre-launch power and data transfer services required to initialize the submunitions for accurate post-release guidance to designated targets. The interface definition will be derived through analysis of submunition interface requirements for projected carriage and employment concepts, and the investigation and comparison of viable interface techniques for satisfying these requirements. The recommended approach will be cost effective in terms of the submunition interface application, and have the inherent flexibility and growth for application to a wide range of in development and future submunitions. Physical, electrical/optical, and logical (functional) aspects of the interface will be specified. In Phase II an implementation of the proposed interface definition including critical elements of the associated dispenser electronics will be developed and used to demonstrate and refine the interface concept.
