Title: COMPUTER MODEL FOR OPTIMIZATION OF OPERATION OF A MUNICIPAL TREATMENT SYSTEM DEALING WITH WET-WEATHER FLOWS
Agency: NSF
Contract: N/A
Award Amount: $194,000.00

Abstract:

ALMOST ALL MUNICIPAL SEWAGE COLLECTION AND TREATMENT FACILITIES HAVE WET-WEATHER FLOWS. MANAGING THE WET-WEATHER FLOWS TO MINIMIZE POLLUTION RESULTING FROM COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOWS AND BY-PASSES NEEDS OPERATIONAL STRATEGIES FOR VARIOUS FLOW CONDITIONS. TO DO THIS REQUIRES AN OPERATIONS MODEL OF THE SYSTEM. THE PROJECT PROPSES TO DEVELOP A SOFTWARE PACKAGE WHICH WILL BE USED TO MAKE OPERATIONS DECISIONS TO MINIMIZE THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF POLLUTION ENTERING A RECEIVING BODY OF WATER FROM OVERFLOWS, BY-PASSES AND TREATMENT PLANTS. THE COMPUTER SOFTWARE PACKAGE WILL ENABLE: 1) CHARACTERIZATION OF THE VARIABILITY OF THE INPUTS TO THE SYSTEM. 2) EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE OF EXISTING SYSTEMS TO ACCOMODATE TIME VARIABLES AND TRANSIENT INPUTS. 3) DESIGN OF WASTEWATER DISPOSAL SYSTEMS TO HANDLE VARIABLE AND TRANSIENT INPUTS WITHOUT UNNECESSARY UPSETS AND WITHOUT UNTREATED OVERFLOWS. IN PHASE I OF THE RESEARCH, THE MODELS WILL BE FORMULATED.
