Abstract:
ATC will build on the lightweight armor development work accomplished in Phase I of the project. The armor design concept includes a gradient structure of ceramics and polymers with embedded ballistic fabrics. The initial testing in Phase I revealed a strong potential for this concept to become the new state-of-the-art. The first part of the project will focus on stopping 7.62 x 39mm ball rounds at 2500 fps at a reduced weight. In the second part, ATC will focus efforts on designing an armor system to stop 7.62 x 54R AP rounds at 2800 fps.
