Simple Modular Technology (SMarT) Tower Systems for Free-Standing Small Wind Turbines
The unsubsidized cost of electricity for small wind turbines is too high to achieve the widespread deployment goals of industry stakeholders. Guyed towers, which traditionally are the least expensive to erect, have a larger footprint, require more maintenance, and are less visually appealing than the monopole towers preferred by many customers. However, monopole tower systems (foundations plus towers) are logistically cumbersome and cost inefficient. This project will develop technology to provide construction components that are easy to install, save construction time, and reduce cost. All required foundation materials (except concrete) will be inexpensively shipped directly to the installer. A hybrid metal-composite tower ¿ which weighs half as much as steel towers, is inexpensive to ship, and is considerably less costly than contemporary monopole alternatives ¿ is currently under development. Further refinement is needed to reduce material cost and installation labor, and develop engineering drawings acceptable to local building authorities. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The technology should simplify installation and reduce the cost of electricity for small wind turbines on monopole towers. For example, a savings in installed cost of approximately 30% is estimated for a contemporary turbine on a 60 foot tower.
