Accurate orientation and position tracking is difficult to achieve over extended missions and in varying environments, such as ambient electromagnetic (EM) noise and inconsistent access to satellites or reference stations (such as vehicle mounted locators). Manufacturers of orientation and tracking monitoring sensors utilize redundancy and complex algorithms to achieve the highest accuracy they can. Infoscitex has developed a novel biomimetic sensor that can be used to calibrate, on the fly, standard sensors to within an accuracy of 1 degree. During the Phase I program several iterations of the biomimetic sensor were fabricated and tested, such that the feasibility of the system was established and a complete sensor package design created. In Phase II complete sensor packages will be fabricated by Infoscitex and tested in collaboration with Dr. Jennie Gallimore. In addition, a complete tracking and orientation system will be assembled and tested in order to best position our sensors for market entry.
