Future distributed "smart sensor" sonobuoy networks show great potential for use by Naval Antisubmarine Warfare (ASW) forces. Dynamic and scalable network solutions are required to support tens to hundreds of sonobuoys over a regional area, including full interoperability with legacy sensor systems and gateways to emerging grid concepts (e.g., Expeditionary Sensor Grid, ForceNET). Sensor networks must service an open and unpredictable set of sensor types, users, applications, and communications links. We will demonstrate the capability of self-organized, addressable, multi-node, synchronized, and routed networking among distributed smart sensor nodes using bi-directional delay-tolerant messaging that provides Internet-like services among deployed sonobuoys, hosted platforms, and shore-based installations. Our approach will deliver a complete Integrated Sonobuoy Advanced Networking (ISAN) application demonstration test suite during Phase I. The deliverables of our Phase I research effort address many key challenges that involve the design for simultaneous requirements of low power and high performance. These deliverables will be widely applicable for a variety of military and civil sector sensor networking applications.
