Abstract:
DEVELOPMENT OF A NOVEL TYPE OF PARTICLE DETECTOR IS PLANNED BASED ON ENERGY-SENSITIVE SUPERCONDUCTING STRUCTURES. IN POSITRON EMISSON TOMOGRAPHY (PET)/SINGLE PHOTON EMISSION COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (SPECT) APPLICATION IT PROMISES ORDER OF MAGNITUDE IMPROVEMENTS IN IMAGE QUALITY BECAUSE OF (1) SUBMILLIMETER SPATIAL RESOLUTION; (2) VERY FAST, SUBNANOSECOND READOUT; AND (3) VERY HIGH STOPPING POWER FOR HIGH ENERGY PHOTONS. THE POSSIBILITY OF DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW RING DETECTOR THAT FEATURES BOTH SPECT AND PET IMAGING CAPABILITY IS SUGGESTED.
