Abstract:
Davis proposes a tie down system in which the chain links are made of continuous fiber metal matrix composite (MMC). At the core of each chain link is a carbon fiber filament wound a preformed path. The filament is over molded with aluminum alloy. The strength of the resulting composite approximates that of heat treated alloy steel. The weight is approximately that of aluminum. Each MMC chain link is mechanically joined to give a fully flexible, articulated chain. The tensioner will be similar to current adjusters with an interface specific for the MMC chain configuration. The unique geometry of the chain permits a narrow body adjuster that reduces the weight compared to the current unit. Certain components will be MMC and resin composites for weight reduction and improved corrosion resistance. The MMC is a proven technology currently used in aerospace structures, automotive engine, drive train, and brake system components, golf club heads and shafts, bicycle frames, etc.
