Abstract

Over the past few years, lidar programs have collected 3-D imagery enabling unprecendented views of the battlefield. Unfortunately, lidar systems collect such large volumes of data that it is not available in real time. This SBIR Phase I proposal suggests a research program to design low-SWaP free-space optical communication (FSOC) system to download lidar data to a ground station at high data rates. The proposal begins with analysis of the atmospheric path and system requirements including the effects of turbulence. It continues with scaled laboratory experiments and studies of pre-processing and formatting. Finally, a concrete design for an objective FSOC system is offered.
