High Power Optical Transmitter for Satellite Communications

Freedom Photonics proposes in this SBIR Phase I to develop and evaluate a novel design for a high power optical transmitter suitable for low earth and geosynchronous orbit satellite environments. This design focuses on the key aspects of very high output power, reliability, and radiation hardness. BENEFIT: This high power technology will benefit not only inter-satellite communication links but also LADAR and other links in which it is desirable to omit an EDFA amplifier. Size, weight and power are minimized which makes it applicable to UAVs and other low power and size constricted platforms. Commercial applications include satellite-based and terrestrial-based optical free space terminals.
