Abstract:

ExPERT is an intelligent search engine that unifies neurosymbolic computing with advanced natural language processing techniques derived from ontological semantics. The primary operational goal for ExPERT is for use in determing whether a proposed solution matches identified Air Force needs in order to amplify the effectiveness of an analyst and maximize his time. However, ExPERT can be used to increase effectiveness in any environment where there is a vast corpus of information that needs to be analyzed quickly. ExPERT performs an intelligent search using a free text query to find results based on similarity of meaning with the natural language content of documents to be searched. To achieve this search, ExPERT maintains a knowledge base enhanced with learning (inductive) algorithms that enable an intelligent search. This knowledge base is contained within an ontology designed with a novel structure that permits greater freedom for detecting inference chains and performing induction, each of which greatly enhance the accuracy of the search. The initial prototype for ExPERT achieved 78 percent accuracy in results with a search time of a few seconds. ExPERT is designed to interface with the Information Operations Technical Repository (IOTR), but has numerous application outside that scope as well.
