Abstract:
"A study is proposed in which the performance of an underwater acoustic vector sensor (AVS) containing conventional piezoelectric transducers is compared with that of an AVS containing single crystal piezoelectric transducers. An acoustic vector sensor isa device that measures three orthogonal components of the acoustic particle velocity in conjunction with the acoustic pressure at a single point in space. The sensor employs unimorph bender disks to measure pressure and bimorph bender disks to measurevelocity. The size of each device is the same, so the chief parameters that will be evaluated are the sensitivity and bandwidth. Acoustic vector sensors are being planned for use in tactical underwater surveillance platforms that are operated by the U.S. Navy.Improve performance of tactical underwater surveillance platforms operated by the U. S. Navy."
