Abstract

The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the effectiveness of using an innovative deposition process for making Sm2Fe17Nx/á-Fe16N2 magnetic materials in bulk quantities. In addition, exchange-coupled nanostructured composites of these materials will be produced. The advantage of this process is that it allows precise control over the deposition ions so that the morphology of the materials can be accurately tailored, leading to superior magnetic properties. In addition, the production rate is about 100 times that of other processes, for example sputtering, CVD or molecular beam epitaxy, so that bulk magnets can be fabricated in commercially viable sizes and quantities.
