Abstract:
We propose to develop and deliver a compact, high pulse repetition rate, mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator wavelength converter and cw fiber coupled diode pumped, Q-switched, Nd:YV04 diode pumped laser. A new nonlinear material, periodic poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN) enables an OPO to efficiently convert low energy pulses (150 microjoules) into the mid-infrared wavelengths. By changing the poling spacing, tunable output can be obtained. PPLN is a novel new OPO nonlinear material that can provide a higher level of performance otherwise not possible with conventional nonlinear crystals. The Phase I effort will attempt to demonstrate > 2 kW peak power pulses through the range of wavelengths from 1.5 to 3.5 microns. Research will also be conducted to evaluate PPLN OPO performance at 4.5 microns where the exists significant bulk absorption.
