Abstract

Not Available Silicon-based devices have remained the workhorse of the solid state device community. As the need for higher processor rates is ever increasing, silicon-based systems are being pushed to their limit. In addition, due to the indirect bandgap of silicon, light emission is not possible. We propose an entirely new approach to processor technology. In this project, we will construct and demonstrate the basic device architecture for a three dimensional (3-D) optical processor. Since our technology is not constrained to the surface area of a single crystal silicon substrate, devices measuring in square feet will be enabled. In addition, our device can be fabricated on plastic.
