Abstract:
Protection of ground troops and physical assets against hostile attacks on the battlefield is a crucial capability that must be provided by a combination of sensors and automated signal processing software that can function at all times, including in low-light/no-light and non-line-of-sight conditions. Existing surveillance sensor systems lack the automated ability to detect and classify threats. Advanced Acoustic Concepts proposes to evaluate a combination of existing acoustic sensors with field-proven capabilities and new and existing signal processing and classification software from several successful DoD programs for use as a non-line-of-sight smart sensor system.BENEFITS: Since most existing surveillance systems require continuous monitoring by an operator, which wastes valuable manpower, the proposed automated system will save countless man-hours and provide the capability to distinguish a weapon from the complex acoustic background. The proposed system will also detect weapon signatures in the dark or when the acoustic source is obstructed from view. The commercial applications of the proposed system consist, most notably, in providing perimeter and border surveillance for Homeland Security. Protection of high-value assets and border surveillance are problems that are still not adequately addressed, and acoustic/pressure detection systems are a key component of any such system. Other commercial applications consist of use by law enforcement for detecting gunfire in conditions when there is not line of sight to the shooter, and for non-invasive mechanical monitoring of machinery.
