Abstract:
THz electromagnetic radiation in the frequency range from around 0.3 to 10 THz is an unexplored frontier in imaging science and technology whose application holds great promise for defense, medical imaging, drug discovery and homeland security. Present applications are limited by the availability of powerful sources and sensitive detectors. In Phase I of this program we propose to develop the design of a transportable tunable THz source that will deliver greater than 10W of radiation at the prescribed THz frequencies. The design will be derived from an existing AES concept but will incorporate substantial improvements that deliver higher power and higher efficiency while utilizing no cryogens in the system. In Phase II, the prototype device will be fabricated and tested.
