Title:
Advanced Sacrificial Dense Metallic Coatings for Aircraft Components
Agency / Branch:
DOD / USAF
Contract:
FA8201-04-P-1914
Award Amount:
$99,975.00
Abstract:
The objective of this work is to investigate and develop dense corrosion resistant coatings to improve performance of aircraft components (AC). Cadmium metal (Cd), although a hazardous substance, is still being used as a sacrificial coating on majority of AC component. The PVD-based technique is developed to apply fully dense, well-adhered non-hazardous coatings to external as well internal surfaces of various shapes. This coating deposition process has demonstrated its capacity in applying fully dense coatings to flat surfaces, ODs and IDs of tubular substrates. It will provide elevated resistance to impacts from chemical wear as well as improve anodic compatibility assimilated with galvanic corrosion of high strength steel and coating materials.
